Upwards and onwards!

Hiya Garden Fans,

Well, folks this is the last day of The Garden of Eatin and my time there.  Tomorrow it opens as Front Street Deli, with Jen Bleau as owner.  I am very proud to have her take over as she will continue the very concept I started and expand on it with her wide knowledge of foods.

I have given a lot of thought to how to write my "last" email to you as The Garden of Eatin'.  It could have the drone of The Doors "This is the End" playing in the back ground for a little ambience or it could be up beat.  I prefer upbeat!

One of the nicest compliments I heard, yesterday, was that this person was going to miss ME and MY subtle humor more than anything.  I really appreciated that comment and I will truely miss the fun of creating humorous emails.

One of the most important things, for me to do, is to THANK YOU for making the store what it was.  The very concept of the local food movement is what we started with.  I wrote to thirty farms with in twenty five miles, or so, and gave them the opportunity to sell their produce to us.  Last fall, farmers were inundated with produce and the "picking" was easy.  This year, however the poor growing season severly impeded our ability to keep our shelves full of local product.  We had to expand our reach to further away, which, in some cases went against the very concept of providing local food. However, thanks to our country's excellent distribution system we didn't have a mass starvation, in Richmond, and we were able to feed our customers. The year I spent in this retail venue and the insight I gained on the shortcomings of local food supply and distribution has been extremely valuable.

In the year to come I will be embarking on a new venture at my farm in Dresden, changing my "conventional" greenhouse growing operation to organic vegetable production.  When I first built the original 36,288 square feet of glass greenhouse in 2000, it was the first of its kind in Maine.  Many old timers came in and told me that it was going to fall under the weight of the snow (I wouldn't have invested as much as I did if it was going to collapse!) .  Today, Maine's largest greenhouse of the same style is in Madison and houses Backyard Farms hydroponic tomato growing facility and covers over 25 acres with glass.  And remember hydroponic growing is not organic.

I have also changed my mind on just how important biodynamics is to the health of our environment and to us, as the human element.  Our overall health, in America is failing and now the new science to growing good food is old school.  Rather than using chemical warfare to grow our foods, if we use good old common sense our food system will be better.  (there are a lot of books on this subject, so I won't go into much other detail) The Native Americans helped the early settlers of the new world to grow better corn by putting dead fish and seaweed under their seed in the field.  The degradation of those "organic" materials and the nutrients released in the process fed the corn and it grew better.  The methods farmers have used in the 20th century have completly distrupted the cycle and we now have soils that are essentially dead while the synthetic nutrients applied are the plants' life support system.

Oh, I have wandered again... sorry.  What I hope to accomplish in the years to come is to be a part of the solution in providing locally grown produce at affordable prices and supplying our supermarkets with food that hasn't traveled far.  And not only that, but developing a system of growing farmers to take over in the future. We have an exciting phenomenon taking place in Maine and that is the onslaught of young people interested in organic food production.  But there are lot of hurdles for these young folks and I want to see them and their desendants turn the stereotype of the poor, over worked farmer into something that more people will strive to do and want a career in.

If you want to keep in touch with me, you may email me at greenhouseguy08@yahoo.com (I know, I could have come up with something more crafty, but maybe in the future).

At any rate, I will be working the store for the last time, this evening and would love to have you stop in.

And once again....THANKS!

We are CEL..E..R..EE, all my brothers sisters and me...

Hey Garden GREATS,

Sorry for the many emails but they will end (from me) shortly....

And sorry for the goofy subject line, but family and celery are almost alike today.  Someone overlooked the stock and ordered more celery than we can possibly use or sell in a weeks time!!!!.  So, seeing that this is something of importance...its buy two for $3.00 or 1 for $1.99!  Can't beat that price anywhere!

I almost made the subject line "Have you hugged your celery today" but I thought that that was corny!

Any who, see ya over the weekend!

Signs, signs everywhere a sign!

Greetings Garden Fans!

In these final days before I depart The Garden of Eatin, I have gone a little nuts and am packing out the store for the weekend! Our dried fruits are plum full (no pun intended), as is Pleasant Pond Orchards Granola, the raspberry white chocolate truffle trail mix (thats a mouthful and a delicious one at that!) our sweets and pies, our quiches, and deli salads.  I got all kinds of cheese in today including the infamous Roaring
Forties Bleu and another brie, plus Morse's Sour Mustard Pickles

I was in Lewiston today and picked up some of Mailhot's Sweet Italian and Hot Italian sausage.  I love going there becuase it always smells so good. Today was no exception.  They were cooking something, I forgot the name but the Canadians call it french peanut butter.

The donut man was here today, so if you have been craving Mrs. Dunstan's Donuts, they are here.  Plus a few Fox Family Potato Chips.

Oh, by the way, have you seen the Richmond Sports Calendar?  In our ad, I say "When Richmond Wins, You Win!" When a Richmond School team wins, the particpants and families (one in the family has to have the uniform) that come in sporting a team uniform, they get $2.00 off a large pizza.  Jen will honor that ad and any others I have out there!  Last night just as I was cleaning up I spotted a bus coming over the bridge and thought "Oh, not now!" But unfortunately they must have lost and didn't stop here.  But if any of you has children in Richmond Sports, we'd love to have y'all come in.  Just give a call ahead if you have a large group and we'll be ready for ya'!

We also are well stocked with our hormone free boneless skinless chicken breast and ribeye.  We have lots of produce coming in tomorrow and WOW we will be full!  So, come on down and help me empty the place out this weekend!

Oh, and one other thing, don't let the crazy "Bridge Closed 4.5 Miles Ahead" sign keep you from coming in the store.  Why it has to be right in front of MY store I do not know.  But, it has caused some concern among some locals who don't read the rest of the sign that says LOCAL TRAFFIC ONLY.  Remember last year, when they ripped out the sidewalk just as we opened and it stayed that way for two months?  Oh well!

As ALWAYS I look forward to seeing y'all in The Garden THIS WEEKEND!

Get your sweet corn hee ya!

Hello Garden Friends,

You know, I try not to send too many emails, but around this place, things are always in motion and when something worth telling you comes along, I just have to let ya' know!

Years ago, when I was in high school and a member of the FFA (Future Farmers of America) we spent many days at the Big E, in Springfield Mass. manning the booths, competing in various competions with other New England FFA chapters and general hanging around.  In the midway, there was a food vendor selling corn on the cob.  The repeating, booming loud speaker would blurt out, every few minutes; Butter, butter, butter, butter corn, it's soooooooo gooood!   Well, if I had the same venue and had the corn I just picked up today I could do the same. As soon as I got this, I opened an ear and chomped right in, uncooked, thats how good this is!   Sweet and tender.

I got some of the best corn I have had all year, this morning.  Super fresh, super sweet butter and sugar corn.   Its awesome!   I have also stocked up on ribeyes and our hormone free chicken.  So, if you are barbequing this weekend, we've got great food for you!  Nothing says summer better than barbeque beef, chicken and corn!

Jen and Cassie have been hard at work making all of our great pies, quiches, cakes, pesto, hummus, soups, and more,  We are really well stocked for the Labor Day parties.

We are open all weekend.  Tomorrow we will close at 6:00pm, but Monday is business as usual!

See ya' in The Garden!

Ain't it Grand!

Hiya Garden Fans!

It's nice that the summer finally got here, now that its Labor Day!  Its also really great that I found (or she found me) a great person to take over The Garden of Eatin'.  Jen has worked for me nearly from the start of The Garden and you all have tasted much of her handy work in her quiches, salads and pastries.  Jen has always worked the 5am - 1pm shift and many of you may not have met her.  But tomorrow evening, Jen and her husband, Jim, will be here turning pies (pizza) and working the store.  We hope to complete the transition in the next week or two.  So, come on down and lets make them hop!  Order five or ten pies at a time (hehehe) just kidding.  But, really please come down and meet them if you can.

By tomorrow afternoon the store will be fully stocked for the weekend.  Boneless breast hormone free chicken, ribeye steaks, roasted vegetables, potato salad, corn on the cob, you name it we should have it!

Have a great weekend, and as always I look forward to seeing you in The Garden THIS WEEKEND!

Something tasty, something sweet..Jen is the one you've got to meet!

Hi my dear Garden fans!

How did you like the peice on MPN Monday eveing and yesterday morning?  I thought it came out just right.  Tom Porter does a great job.  If you didn't hear it go to mpbn.org and then to Maine Things Considered to hear and/or read it.

Its great to have Jen, back in the kitchen whipping up her great sweet and savory treasures and its great working with her to transition the store to her.  Jen used to work early mornings but now can be found at almost any time of the day as she wants to meet her customers at various times.  So, be sure to stop in and talk with her.sometime!

I got a great deal on hormone free boneless skinless chicken breasts (its the same chicken we have been carrying) and I have put it on sale for $2.99/lb.  Also, vine ripened tomatoes from Backyard Farms, in Madison, just $1.99/lb. Let's not forget New England grown sweet corn at 65 cents an ear.

Someone (don't exactly remember who) came in and asked for sausage and cabbage soup the other day.  I said that we'd have it on Wednesday (thats today!) and we have it!  So, if that's you....come and get it!

With school starting, folks will be getting back into the swing of things and back to schedules.  We will be boosting up our meals to go to heat and eat, in the cooler as well as something special for the Richmond Sports teams; When Richmond wins, You win.  When any Richmond school team wins, you can get $2.00 off any large pizza.  Just wear the team uniform or other regalia and get rewarded for the win! I have a feeling we will be serving a lot of pizza over the course of the fall!  Jen will honor any specials I have initiated, once she takes the reigns.

Hey, have a great week.  See ya at The Garden of Eatin!

You can hear it all on MPR

Hiya Garden Fans,

Be sure to tune your radio to 90.1 FM at 5:40pm, tonight, to Maine Things Considered, for an interview with Tom Porter.  Since he did the intial interview with me just over a year ago, at our opening, he was quite interested in a follow up and especially as he had heard of the possible closure of the store.

A lot of neat things have happened over the past week and I dump it all out in the interview.  I think that you will like what your hear!

Today through Thurday we have potatoes for .99/lb and sweet juicy oranges 3/$1.00! (while supplies last).  Oh, yeah and tasty ribeye steaks for just $8.99/lb!

As always,  I look forward to seeing you at The Garden of Eatin!

Good Stuff in The Garden!

Hello Garden Fans!

Yes, I am still here!  We are OPEN and glad to be.  Thanks to all of you who sent me emails begging me to stay open, you really lifted my spirits and gave me a new direction to follow.

As you know, these past few months were "a tough row to hoe" as the weather was less than ideal for all of us.  It brought us all down.  If I learned anything from this past few weeks it was that we need each other, especially in these times.  I always look forward to seeing and talking to my customers both new and regulars alike!

Next week, Jen will be returning to muster up some wonderful sweets and baked goods.  I tried making quiches the other day and discovered, after making them that I had way too much filling left over.  They cooked pretty well, but didn't set up right.  Jen just happened to drop in and thats when I discovered I was using the wrong measuring cup and instead of cups, it was in quarts.  so, the "3/4 cup of cream" turned into "3/4 of a quart of cream".  You can see the predicament.  Quiche is better left to the professionals.

The local produce is coming in in dribs and drabs, but we still have a great selection from Maine and New England.  We have green and yellow squash, broccoli (from Presque Isle) Carlson's (Dresden) green beans, red and russet potatoes, onions, red onions, garlic, shallots, green bell peppers, red peppers, fresh basil, corn and a whole lot more.  Maine carrots will be in shortly and apples!

This week we have boneless chicken breast and ribeye steaks, perfect for grilling!   And today we have MJ's vegetarian baked beans!  I always look forward to MJ's homemade baked beans on Saturdays, they are awesome!

I hope to see y'all in the store this weekend!  (I will be in the store this afternoon and evening)

Have a great day!

The eleventh hour and a stay of execution!

Dear Friends,

What a roller coaster of a ride I have been on over the last two days.  And just a little while ago a fellow entrepeneur came to see me about a possible buyer for The Garden of Eatin',  SO WE ARE STAYING OPEN!  He told me the same things that I have been hearing; that this little store has done a lot for our area and it needs to stay open.  The folks that are interested have been in this business for a long time and he says that they would be a perfect fit to the goals and aspirations of The Garden of Eatin.

Yesterday and today it has felt like I have been at my own funeral and its been great seeing and hearing from so many of you. It really means alot.

So, keep on coming in, we are a little low on some items, but will fill back up shortly.  AND AS USUAL, I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU IN THE GARDEN!!!!!!

:(

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Saturday, August 15th will be our first year anniversary and, unfortunately, our last.  We are closing for good on Sunday.

It pains me, terribly, to tell you this as I have come to really enjoy the friendships I have made through the store and meeting so many great people.

My intents and goals for the store, from day one was to bring to town as much locally grown products from the rich agricultural lands around the bay and around Maine.  We made some of the best foods around right here in the store.  The women who have worked feverishly in the kitchen were some of the best around and I thank each one of them for their talents.

Unlike other "convenience" stores, we used the best ingredients in all of our products, relying on the food purveyors for only the basics and used as much local and fresh foods as possible  If we wanted to be like everyone else we would have put less meat on the sandwiches and used breads that one needs a dictionary just to understand what they are ingesting and charged less.  Our sandwiches had a true quarter pound of meat on each one.

And the pizza.....how I hate leaving you with out great pizza.  I loved to hear from y'all about how much you liked the pizza.

I blame the economy as well as the poor non-summer like weather that had a lot to do with the decline in business, when it was supposed to be the time of year with the most business, and now we head into fall.

If anything, our store helped the other stores to get better and give you a better selection.  Only one store in town had a small selection of meats, when we opened, now everyone has meat.  I brought in fish, now another has fish.  I brought in loads of vegetables, the other has more vegetables. I applogize for the abruptness, but I did all I could to keep this little store alive and I THANK YOU for being part of it.

EVERYTHING in the store must go by Sunday.  We have a deli case, convection oven, 20 quart mixer, front counter, small upright freezer and display shelving for sale as well, plus plenty of food.

I am sure that I will see many of you around!

Remember to eat well and to eat local!

Fabulous and Flavorful!

Hiya Garden Fans!

What beautiful weather, finally!  Its great to see the boat traffic on the river and see y'all out and about having fun!
At the Garden of Eatin, we have been enjoying the increased traffic this better weather brings.  Thank you!

This week we have ribeye steaks at $8.99/lb all week, Carlson's Farm green beans $1.99/lb and this Tuesday get a sneak taste of our new  Buffalo Chicken Pizza ( I am still looking for the proper name for it, such as, Buffalo Pie, not to be confused with cow pie) but any way, this is an awesome pizza.  Tuesday night is "name that buffalo chicken pie" night with 10" BCP for $6.99!   Let me know what you think!  I have been trialing it for a while and think I have it right this time!  Last night, I made the perfect pizza and gave a slice or two, to a very discerning customer.  She looked at me and gave me the two thumbs up and said that it is perfect!  Thats a compliment!

We have some new matted photos in our "Arts and Crafts" area that are really neat,.  Plus, some garden art from Freebird Forms in Dresden.

How do you like the new Fizzy Lizzy soda?  And the Fentimen's, which is out of stock, so I think y'all liked it.  Hopefully, the new pastas will be in soon, from Italy.  I can't wait to use them in our deli creations.

At anyrate, I hope that y'all are enjoying the great weather and our great foods....I look forward to seeing you in The Garden of Eatin!

Just for YOU!

Hello, once again, Garden Folks!

This weekend, as I assume you are aware, is the Richmond Days Celebration held tomorrow through Saturday.  There's a lot going on around town, and a lot of it right around our store!  I was told, by the police, that the street will be closed from our ice machine south, so that we will have plenty of space in front of the store for you, our customers, to park and turn around!  We weren't open last year at this time, so I have no idea what to expect, but we are gearing up for a great weekend!  We will stay open later each night as it demands.

Speaking of being open later, I have posted new hours operation on the doors.  We are now open 6am to 7pm SUNDAY TO TUESDAY and 6am to 8pm WEDNESDAY THRU SATURDAY.  When we get our beer and wine license the hours will most likely change again.

New, this week...is...I have submitted and paid for our beer and wine license!  (Yeahhhhh!)  We should have it in three to four weeks!   AND, new today, we have some fantastic european foods including; Rissotto mixes and Cous Cous, from Italy, USDA Certified Organic Olive Oil from Spain, Goumet Taffy (an interesting package and great flavors!), 34 Degree Rosemary and Sesame Flat Crackers (all natural from Colorado), Fentimen's (from the UK) Botanical Brews (here we call them sodas) and Fizzy Lizzy ( a fruit and fizzy water "soda" that is most natural than any other soda we have. Tomorrow, The Garden of Eatin chips should be in!   We will be getting a variety of pastas from Italy as well, in the near future.  These pastas are not your Prince or Barrella varieties,  these are hand "crafted" from small family businesses in Italy and are the real deal!  What a delight!

It was interesting, when I got the marketing sheet on the crackers that it featured the crackers with a hunk of Humbolt Fog Bleu cheese (like what we already carry!).  This all comes from a locally owned  and operated specialty food distributor in Bowodinham!

Also, new this week (sort of) is a wider selection of A Wee Bit Farm's all natural, grass fed and nitrate free meats and smoked goods.  I know the price is higher than the other stores for the same cuts, but you get what you pay for, and this meat is superb, grown in Maine, and is the healthier choice!  There are fliers on the wire rack near the meat doors that explain more about their meats. Just for YOU, if you bring in a copy of this email, I will give you 10% off the labeled price so that you can try out this incredible product!

Speaking of superb, as Jen was making a special order vegan brownie platter, she made some to sell at the store.  Wow!  We had samples at the counter, and they are fantastic.  You can rest assurred that what ever your special need is for food, we can make it!

Grandpa Paul, from California, brought in a new load of naturally grown peaches, plums and nectarines, yesterday afternoon.  These were picked only five or six days ago and are so much better than the big store "cheap" stone fruits.  They taste like they just came off the tree (and they did!)  They certainly haven't been hanging out in warehouses across the country!  They were picked, packed and shipped to us! They are so tasty!

I almost forgot the OTHER give away!  Our Customer and New Customer appreciation coupons!  Bring this email in with you tomorrow afternoon or anytime and we will give you twenty four coupons for you to put your name on and give away to your friends and neighbors who have not been to The Garden of Eatin! When you run out, just come in to get more! The top three people to bring in the most new customers will be handsomely rewarded for their efforts in October!  And I don't mean just a free pizza or a coupon!

Next week we will be getting organic, Maine made, tofu with soy grown in Skowhegan and more of the Smith Family Farm yogurts in Maple, Vanilla and Lemon Dream.

One last thing to note is that this time of year is when the daylilies are in peak bloom.   We will have a special offering of many varieties of daylilies, starting at $5.00 per pot.  These are great hybrids with lots of great colors and plant habits.  We will have them starting tomorrow!

I hope that y'all enjoy the weekend, eat well and most importantly, stop in to The Garden of Eatin!

A weekend to savor great flavor!

Afternoon Garden fans!

If you are planning any weekend eating activities, we are fully stocked and ready!  (thank goodness emails are paperless, this one would have a little drool on it, as I am writting from the store and there are blueberry pies in the oven!)

Our meat department is loaded with some great meats, including ribeyes, boneless pork loin chops, ham steak, all natural chicken breast and ground beef.  We have all the fixin's for summer salads including long seedless cucumbers, all kinds of lettuce, Bowdoinham's Locally Known salad blends, Madison's Backyard Farms tomatoes, and more.  In the dried fruit department we just got in more dried kiwi. The kiwi is our most popular dried item.  But the dried pineapple, mango chips, apricots, papaya and the fruit medley are extremly tasty too.  Cheese, do we have cheese!  Smoked Gouda, Cabot's Extra sharp cheddar, Humbolt Fog, Roaring Forties Bleu, Maytag Bleu, and a few other odds and ends.  Someone messed up our citrus order, so we have lots of lemons and grapefruit.  Citrus tastes so refreshing on these hot muggy days.

We have several flavors of some new Kettle Chips and Krunchers.  The Garden of Eatin chips will arrive next week.  And the Daily Bread display has just been restocked.

In the frozen food sections we have Jyang Lee's Oriental foods that are still $1.00 off.  And our icream freezer is well stocked with some good old fashion icecreams.

Once again, we are stocked up with lots of great fresh foods and ready for  anything you need.

Uh oh, I almost forgot, Jack Baker, from Baker's Restaurant (upstairs) just brought down some of his fantastic crab cakes.  AND...my California fruit man just walked through the door and told me that his next shipment is expected to arrive Monday or Tuesday!  Those peaches, nectarines and plums are by far the best tasting stone fruits I have had in years.  And we will have them in stock no later than Tuesday!

Have a wonderful weekend and I hope to see you in The Garden of Eatin!

Long winded, but well worth the read!

Top o' the week to ya' Garden Fans!

July and August are my favorite summer months, the real bounty of the farmlands begins to fill our shelves!  It is also when the daylilies brighten our landscapes.  I recently terminated my interest in Fieldview Farm, in Dresden and included in my settlement is quite a few clumps of a wide variety of colors of daylilies!  We will begin to dig and move them to Sonshine Growers and The Garden of Eatin this week.  The daylily is probably one of the most forgiving and hardy perennials I have ever seen!  We will have blow out prices, too!  You will get a big bang from your buck on these plants!

At Sonshine Growers we have shifted from our spring garden plants to cut herbs and a few other veggies which we will sell at the store and to other wholesalers in Maine. Two of my favorite items are basil and pea tendrils.  The young pea plant,is cut at 4 -6 inches with a bud and they taste like peas but they don't roll off your fork!  They are great used in salads, sauteed in asian cooking or as a garnish. I think of all the summer salads I have had over the years with peas in them and the peas sink to the bottom.  With the pea plant, the flavor will stay with the rest of the dish! The variety we are primarily growing produces a soft lavender blossom, which is different from the normal white flower seen most.  We've been using our basil for the last couple of months in our homemade pesto and pizza. and we now have it fresh in bags.

July 23 through the 25 is Richmond Days!  We will be open extra hours through out the weekend and will have lots of specials available.  Last year we weren't open yet, so we are expecting a big crowd through the doors!

Speaking of hours, we are changing our hours to Wednesday through Saturday 6 am to 8pm and Sunday through Tuesday 6am to 7pm.

In celebration of our 1st year anniversary in August we are saluting YOU, our customers.  If it wasn't for YOU we wouldn't be here!  Starting July 23rd (just in time for Richmond Days)  we will have books of ten two dollar off coupons that we ask you to put your name on and give it to a friend.  The friend puts their name and email address on it and when we collect them over the next two months we will give a substantial prize to the person (or persons) who bring in the most new customers to The Garden of Eatin!  Just bring a copy of this email or next weeks email to get your book of coupons.  What a great time to give them away at Richmond Days!

This is YOUR store and we want to carry what YOU want.  Hence, the addition of a few gourmet cheeses, from around the world.  What do you want to see here?  Drop a note in our Suggestions Can.  We are looking at several new additions to the store which will include more organic, vegan and gluten free selections.

There is so much that we can do for YOU!  We are not the normal convenience store, that's for sure.  But, real convenience is what we're about, meaning that we are providing as much local and Maine grown foods as possible!  The convenience is that you need not travel great distances to get your fresh, wholesome foods and you are supporting local businesses that keep their money in the local economy.

Got a special event coming up? We cater with our huge selection of foods.  Hosting a wedding or party and need special foods for the guests?  Let us know, we are here for YOU!

Oh, before I forget, we will have the "real" Garden of Eatin' chips and other all natural chips coming in next Thursday!  I can't wait for the beet and carrot chips!  M,mmmmm!

Now that the spring greenhouse season is over, I will be in the store more often.  I look forward to seeing y'all often and seeing you at The Garden!

Mmmmm, mmmm Good!

Hi All!

You know I try to fill The Garden of Eatin with as much local and Maine produced products as I can..But did you know that even some of the "exotic" fruits we carry are still locally owned, or at least related to some of our local people?  One of our customer's, a native of Columbia South America, family produces bannanas under sveral labels.  So, most likely if your see bannanas grown in Columbia, their family's cooperative is involved.  And now we have another customer who has been in the fresh fruit industry in California and while visiting their children and grandchildren in Dresden for the summer, they are having real tree ripened fruit shipped out for he and the kids to sell.  They are storing what peaches, plums and nectarines they have left after thier weekend sales in our cooler.

Tonight, just before we closed I tried a peach and nectarine.  WOW!  Nobody has fruit that tastes like that!  It really does taste like it was just picked.  Actually, it has only been off the tree for five days!  This stuff is awesome!  You won't find anything like it in the big stores, guaranteed.  But we will have it all available this week and every week through the summer!  How I'd savor a fresh peach cobbler, right now!

This place only gets better and better!

Have a great week!

Strawberry Fields Forever! (Well not quite forever, maybe three or four weeks, though!)

After last weeks' email, I am not going to get into what the weather is going to be.  I thought we were going to have a gorgeous weekend and it rained.  So, if I say it looks like a rainy weekend, maybe the sun will be out?

At any rate, no matter what is going on outside, we have great things going on inside!  Today, for example, we have our award winning fish chowder. Being the official taste tester, I must say the cooks outdid themselves, again!  Our soups and chowders are awesome! We sure have some talented people in the kitchen!

I guess our talent and great fresh foods are groing on people!  Did you know that we do catering?  Our law makers in Augusta have been eating our sandwiches on occasion, the Richmond School Teachers are enjoying our sandwiches today and we will be making pizzas for the summer school program next week!  If you are having a meeting or large gathering, please give us the opportuntiy to share our goodness with your group!

We just got restocked on our hot italian, sweet italian and breakfast sausages from Mailhot's in Lewiston, as well as 90% lean ground from Eastern River Cattle Company.  We have all kinds of produce and (hopefully) we will have FRESH STRAWBERRIES tomorrow, from Fair Winds Farm, in Bowdoinham!  We will have fresh homemade shortcakes available, starting tomorrow!  (I love this time of year!)

We have new cheeses coming in today, more Daily Bread, Black Crow Bakery bread tomorrow, fresh eggs, and lots more!

Have a great weekend, eat well and be well!  See ya' in The Garden!

The sun will come out... tomorrow!

Greeting Garden Fans!

As the old saying goes; "If you don't like the weather in Maine, just wait a minute". Or my favorite; ' My three favorite things about Maine is July, August and September".   So, this (weather) shall too pass and it's off to the races!  Looks like a great weekend for a barbeque!

And here in The Garden of Eatin', we are ready with lots of fresh products for you!  Today, of course, is Fresh Fish Friday and we have haddock at $5.99 a pound and wild salmon.  To go along with the fish we have a great selection of fresh herbs that include thyme, dill, rosemary, sage, basil and stevia, all grown in my greenhouse in Dresden.  We also have rhubarb, from Bowdionham and Locally Known's herb salad mix and baby spinach greens.  From Wagonwheel Farm we will large leaf spinach and another salad mix, tomorrow.  Starting June 20th we will have fresh strawberries from Fairwinds Farm, also in Bowdionham.   Just like spring and watching the various trees and flowers come to life, it is a joy to return to our local farms for the bounty of our local farmlands.

Jen has made some phenominal strawberry rhubarb pies as well all lots of other fruit pies.  She has made quite a bit of stock for our deli department.  I had one customer ask me to order her an apple pie from our pie vendor and she was amazed ot hear that we make all of our pies in house and use as much of our own prioduce for the filling as possible!

We will have plenty of cheese in stock this weekend as well as a host of other great items.  The cooler is getting more and more packed day by day, with some really great fruit and veggies.

Outside in the plant department, we have refreshed the display, this afternoon and have several new items including pickling cukes and patio tomatoes in large pots.  They are perfect to grow right on your deck or patio.

All in all, The Garden of Eatin' is well stocked for the weekend with ALL KINDS of goodies. A little something for everyone!

As always, I look forward to seeing you in The Garden!

Land of the eternal spring

Hiya Garden Fans!

Ten years ago, I went to Chimaltenango, Guatemala for eight days.  It was an eye opening experience, never the less very interesting as Chimaltenango is a mile above sea level and the yearly average temperature is around 72.  Very pleasant weather, indeed.  Nearly everyday, the valleys are full of fog and as the fog burns away the dormant volcanos begin to loom overhead.

No volcanoes here, but a few days of wet and cool weather makes for even greater appreciation of what we have around us.  This weekend's bright and sunny days and cool nights are awesome. The boats are going in the water, across the street.  Flowers are bursting with color and farmers are beginning to plant outdoors.  Ahh, spring in Maine!

We've got lots of plants at my farm for your gardens, which you can buy either at The Garden of Eatin or K&G Harware.  If you don't see something that you need, let us know and I'll see if we have it in inventory. At the farm we are smack dab in the middle of our season and I am now planning on what to grow for the rest of the year.  I'm fortunate enough to have an indoor farm, so we will have fresh produce well into the fall.

But, now we have loads of fresh produce right in our store!  Locally Known (from Bowdoinham) now has their herb salad mix and baby spinach in The Garden of Eatin'; we have fresh rhubarb and with out going into too much detail, our shelves are well stocked with all kinds of great garden goodies.  New today we have vanilla and chocolate WHOOPIE PIES, fresh from our kitchen!  Also new this past week is our additon to our dried fruits with papaya!  I never liked the "store bought" dried fruits, but this stuff is better than candy and packs a great punch!  I hope that ya'all like it as much as we do!  We have a fresh stock of Mrs. Dunster's doughnuts, cresents and nuggetts.  Our new morning special is buy two large coffees with a bag or cresents or nuggetts for $4.99 and $5.99 respectively.

These past few weekends we have seen an increase in making "special" pizzas with a customer's own ingredients, such as tofu cheese.  If you are interested in doing something like that we are not opposed to it and will accomadate you any way we can.  Special orders do not upset us!

Have you tried Thorncroft Farm's naturally raised chicken?  We only stock a couple of birds at a time so if we are out, just ask or call ahead and we'll get it for you.  thorncroft Farm is in Pittston.

Later this week we will have steamed hot dogs available!  And every Saturday our own baked beans, served hot!  Pair them up with our own potato salad and a steamed ear of corn!  Mmmmmm, mmm!

Well, that's enough food talk for now...enjoy your day and enjoy great foods from The Garden of Eatin!  Don't forget that we are open until 8pm Thursday throgh Sunday!

See ya at The Garden!

Smile and say CHEESE

Greetings Garden Fan!

This week(end) in The Garden we have several new items and lots of stock on the rest!  Cheese is the feature of the weekend with several new fabulous varieties.  Roaring Forties, from Tasmania; uis matured in was thus retaining its moisture and creating a smooth and creamy testure.  A full flavored bleu cheese with a sweet, nutty character and good aftertaste.  We got it as a substitue for Cashel and is has amazed everyone who has tried (and bought) it.  We also have Blue des Basque-France sheep's milk blue, Humbolt Fog Goat cheese from California, and St. Andre France Brie.  Jen was quite excited to get these new cheeses in, she says its a chef's paradise!

We have fresh boneless, skinless chicken breasts, plenty of A Wee Bit Farm's meat products, ribeyes, haddock, and Eastern River Cattle Company's 95%lean ground beef.

In produce, we have Florida Sweet Corn, lots of tomatoes, onions, potatoes, sweet potatoes, lettuces, zuccini and summer squash, mushrooms, broccoli, lemons, carrots and more (just can't remember them all!).

How do you like the new dried fruits?  The dried kiwi has been a big hit!  What other dried fruits would you like?

As always we look forward to seeing you in The Garden!

Relaxing in The Garden!

Greetings Garden Fans!

Someone asked me if I ever get a chance to relax.  If coming in to the store to work a shift counted, then yes.  At Sonshine Growers (my farm in Dresden) we are out straight planting and shipping Bonnie Plants (like the ones in front of the store) all over over Maine.  And its Memorial Day weekend, the busiest day for a greenhouse grower in Maine.  But, to come in to the store and work a shift is fun and a great break from the daily grind (plus I get to see my customers!)

New stuff this week includes "Rose" veal patties from Eastern River Cattle Company, in Dresden.  The term "rose" means that the meat has a slight rose color due to the fact that the calf stayed with mamma and ate a little grass.  This is the natural way to raise an animal for veal.  We also have their 95% lean ground beef. Also, A Wee Bit Farm's keilbasa, summer sausage and other sausages.  Daily Bread delivered yesterday and the bread is almost gone!  Might have to have them make a special delivery. Mrs. Dunstan's donuts are in house.  Last weekend, I was told that they would be in but the salesman "forgot" to call me and tell me that his shipment hadn't arrived (excuses, excuses!) in time to fulfill my email promise that they were coming in.  Anyway, they are here!  Our produce selection is excellent, if I say so myself.  Jen has been extra busy making her sweets and savory pies.  She made fourteen pies today!  I have beef tips marinating in teriyaki sauce tonight and will package them tomorrow.  And my favorite new item of the week is our new dried fruit!  Dried kiwi, mango slices, pineapple rings and a mixed fruit.  Fabulous!  I have never been one for dried fruit like you get at a (nameless) grocery store.  This stuff is fabulous (did I say that before?).  I also got in more smoked gouda, raspberry/white chocolate truffle trail mix, sauerkraut and mustard pickles.

In the pizza department, it seems as though we have something of a hit here and now I have been tinkering with a new creation...Kennebec Kalzones!  I have four names in mind: The River Bottom - Loaded with everything but the rubber boot.  Then The Red Nun, The Mariner (with lobster!) and...I forget the last one, but will announce them all in a week or so when I have the staff updated on how to prepare them.  I love playing with my food!  I have been making different versions of the river bottom and think I have it down.

Seeing that its Friday (well, almost Saturday, now) we had Fresh Fish Friday (and now Seafood Saturday!) with halibut, salmon and scallops.  I almost brought some scallops home to wrap in bacon, but it was too late and I hate to waste such tasty food.  Just my luck I'd spend the time to wrap the little scallops and then put them in the oven and then wake up four hours later to a pan of black nuggets.  Don't think that hasn't happened before!

Hey, have a great weekend...eat well and be well and we'll see you in The Garden!

Good Morning Garden Fans!

Good Morning Garden Fans!

Just wanted you to know that we have gotten in some great new meat products from Wee Bit Farm in Orland.  Keilbasa, Summer Sausage and lots of other sausages, too.  We also have great ribeyes, perfect for a sunny afternoon barbeque!

The produce selection is huge this weekend, as is the breads, pastries and Jen's cakes.  You just have to try her Coffee Walnut Cake.

We are getting a fresh supply of Jyang-Lee Kitchens authentic chinese foods and Mrs. Dunstan's doughnuts today.  I think Mrs. Dunstan's doughnuts have it all over Dunkin Donuts (never mind that our coffee is much better than theirs, too)

Oh, and I can't forget the most interesting and NEW product line we have...Bonnie Plants (that we grow here at Sonshine Growers).  We have a great selection of herbs and veggie plants for your garden.  If you don't see something you want, we most likely have it here.  So, just let us know what you need.

Hey, have a great day!  See you at The Garden of Eatin!

This week in The Garden!

Greetings Garden Fans!

A bit of house keepig first...
We are in need of evening and weekend help, to start immediately.  The successful applicants will be working with food (believe it or not I had one young lady come to work tellling me how she just loved working in the kitchen.  Then the next day she quit saying it was too food oriented for her!) and assisting customers.  It would be a great job for folks looking to make some extra money as well as for college kids.

We have cut out the weekly Baked Chicken Wednesday for a while.  Seems as though interest has been in decline.  Time for something new, any suggestions?

The store, this week, is packed out with some awesome produce!  We are fully stocked with baby red potatoes, asparagus, yellow and green summer squash, green beans, lettuces, white button mushrooms, portabella mushrooms and and a lot more.  Locally Known (From Bowdoinham) salad mixes will be available in about 10 days!  I will have my own fresh herbs in house with in the week.  Basil, thyme, rosemary, sage and cilantro to start with.

As always, we look forward to seeing you in The Garden!  Enjoy the great weather!

The ME generation

Greetings Garden Fans!

Living in Maine provides us a lot of fun marketing opportunities.  The ice cream folks use our infamous black flie season for "Black Fly Ice Cream".  That's chocolate chip ice cream with itty bitty chocolate chips.  Or "Moose Tracks" with large chunks of chocolate and peanut butter in vanilla ice cream, The beer people in Hallowell have "Bug Ale" and I am sure that there a lot more less than desirable things to associate food with and to name them after.  But here at The Garden of Eatin, we can bask in the pleasures of life and turn ordinary foods into foods fit for royalty.  We localvores are the true ME generation!

Yesterday afternoon I had to come in to take a shift and got the munchies (imagine that).  I like to try new foods and I thought "hmm, what would a fiddlehead pizza taste like?  And Wa-La!  A new favorite was born!  This tasty morsel features a white pizza loaded with fiddleheads and roasted garlic.  Fantastico!  If you never have had fiddle heads, they are baby ferns that as they emerge in the spring they look like the curly end of a violin (known also as a fiddle).  They taste like a combination of asparagus and broccoli.

In the meat department we just got restocked with USDA Choice ribeye steaks, bacon and chicken breasts.  Tomorow is Fresh Fish Friday and we'll have a great variety of seafood for your Friday meal. Our produce is second to none and we welcome the fresh and local spring fiddleheads to our selection.  Jen has been very busy all week producing a great array of baked goods.  Have you tried her Oat Scotties?  Last week she commented on how she made several batches and just keep them in stock.  Then she caught me taking one two days in a row.  Wow, my knuckles hurt.

Have you bought our Garden Cards yet?  Buy a sheet of ten $10 cards for $90 and you end up saving a total of 10%!  It helps you and it helps us!  We have had (and thank you) people re-up with the cards once they ran out of them.

As always, we look forward to seeing you at The Garden!

Great Goodness in The Garden!

Happy Spring Garden Fans!

I have been reading, over the course of several months (I don't seem to have much time to read) a book called "In Defense of Food" by Michael Pollan.  It's an interesting read descibing the different thoughts on what caused our Western Diet and the subsequent unhealthy consequences that developed over the last 75 years. What it boils down to, at this point, is the symbiotic relationship between healthy soils providing healthy nutrients to make healthy plants, to feed healthy animals to feed us and keep us healthy...the ultimate food chain.  Throw into the mix, locally grown foods keep our economy healthy, too. Tthis book was given to me as a present last fall by a great customer who said the book fits well with our mission at The Garden of Eatin'!  Bravo!

Since opening the store, I too have been eating healthier.  When I do delve into a fast food meal (once in a great moon) I can taste and feel the texture of the not so healthy components.  It reminds me of people who come to visit me from Connecticut and either they can't sleep because its so quiet or when I go there I can't sleep becuase of the drone of the city keeps me awake.  I think living is Maine is much better and eating local is much better as well!

Because we make nearly every consumable item (besides the few pre packaged items) you can bet that their are only real ingredients in them.  Jen, is our life blood of the kitchen with her passion for food.  Over the last month or two, becuase I was leaving my everyday position at the store to farm for a few months we had spread out the responsibilities and ultimately upset our impeccable course of consistency in our foods, for which I am sorry.  BUT, from yesterday forward, Jennifer is back in the saddle and is making every item herself.

I am so glad that spring is here.  Soon we will have local asparagus, fiddleheads, rhubarb and lettuce mix.  What can be better than that!

We finally got in the Smith family Farm yogurt y'all have been begging for! And we have more of the 4, 7 and 12 grain porridges!  I have really come to enjoy those porridges, what a difference compared to boring old oatmeal. Nevermind its made from Maine grown ingredients.  Put a little Maine maple syrup on it and you are off and running!  Also, new this week is Abbott's Gold Cheddar with carmelized onion cheese and (not new, but awesome)  Cashel Bleu.  I never got to try any when it came in last week.  It was gone with in hours.

Have you tried our new Daily Breads?  Again, a great maine made item with natural Maine grown ingredients.

So, to let you know, tomorrow is Fresh Fish Friday!

And, as always, we look forward to seeing you in The Garden!

A little more from The Garden

Hello Garden Friends,

I am sorry to send three emails in three days, but I just can't help myself.  It's not that I have a lot of time on my hands, by any means, but it is just that things just keep happening that I think you should know about it....NOW.

I was excited when I got a call from the store and was told that the new distributor for Fox Family Farms Potato Chips was there and not only were we getting replenished (it was aobut time, their salesman quit weeks ago) and that they also just started carrying Mrs. Dunstan's Donuts!  They are about the best bagged donuts I have had and was so happy to accept to the store.  Customer, Gerry Skinner, had brought in several empty bags when we first opened up and had asked if we would someday carry these.  I was glad to show her, this afternoon, that we found her her donuts!  They are just like homemade!

If there are any left, tomorrow around 11:00, I'll give out samples, since it's Sample Day Saturday.  We will have samples of many of our treats including Jen's delectable deserts!  In the center ring will be Jyang-Lee Kitchen's chinese cooking demonstrations and samples of their delicious foods, sold in the freezer.  We will run the Sample Day Saturday event from 11:00 to when ever we run out, but probably around 2:00pm.

Enjoy the great weather this weekend and come on down The Garden of Eatin!

PS.  Appologies for the missed weekly dinner specials....since leaving to work the farm I passed on the ordering responsibliliteis and the two most important dates (Baked Chicken Wednesday and Fresh Fish Frisday) but, hey it's Sample Day Saturday and we got the goods!

Greetings Garden Affeccionados!

Just a reminder that tomorrow, yes Thursday, evening we are beginning our delivery service to a three mile radius for sales of $10 or more from 4pm - 7pm.  Then every Thursday, Friday and Saturday lunch times (11 - 1pm) and dinner time (4pm - 7pm).  We will expand hours as we grow into our new enterprise.  My biggest fear is that we will get absolutley swamped and not be able to keep up, but we're always up for a challenge!  We have two individuals who will work the streets those days.

The most fun things I can think of for anyone to get involved with is our Sample Day Saturday, this Saturday from 11 - ?.  Angela from Jyang-Lee Kitchens will be giving samples and cooking demonstrations of her authentic oriental foods.  This is awesome as her REAL homemade chinese food is the real enchalada, or in this case, the REAL eggroll.  Her foods taste better than any chinese restaurant I've been to in Maine!  If you haven't tried Jyang-Lee's products I strongly urge you to come down on Saturday.  We will also have Gryffon Ridge Spice Compnay here with their amazing spices of the world and food samples.

Also, please don't forget about our Garden Cards.  You pay $90 and get $100 worth of $10 vouchers to be redeemed for any purchase in increments of $10.  If you spend fourteen dollars, you trade in one card (a savings of 10% on that portion) and four bucks.  It helps you, it helps us.

And have you tried our new Daily Bread yet?  It's the real deal.  Healthy, Maine made and delicious!

We have alot of great things coming up, but I won't keep you now....I'll keep you informed as things progress.

Thanks again for you patronage to the Garden of Eatin'!

Hummus

Hummus is an excellent medium for subtle flavors. This version showcases Ras el Hanout but you may substitute the spices of your choice.

Ingredients
  • 2 Cans Garbanzo Beans/Chick Peas (15 oz.)
  • 3 Tbsp. Tahini (Sesame Paste)
  • 1/4 Cup Olive Oil
  • 1 Tsp. Ras el Hanout (spice blend available at The Garden of Eatin')
  • 1 Large Garlic Clove ~ Minced
  • 1/2 Lemon ~ Juice and Zest Only
  • 1/4 Tsp. Smoked Sea Salt
  • 1/4 Tsp. Freshly Ground Black Pepper
  • Water

Rinse Garbanzo beans in colander under cold water removing any of the “skins” that
come off. Drain and place in food processor or blender. Add the Tahini, Garlic, Olive
Oil, and Lemon Juice and Zest. Pulse until mixture starts to bind together. Add Ras el Hanout, Salt, and Pepper. With processor running, add water in a thin stream until mixture appears creamy. You can see this happen. Stop processor and use a spatula to scrape down the sides and ensure that all ingredients are well mixed. Run processor for about 1 minute to complete blending. Place in serving bowl, cover, and let rest for at least 2 hours for flavors to develop. Allow to reach room temperature before serving. Prior to serving, pour thin drizzle of Extra-Virgin Olive Oil over the Hummus. Serve with pita bread. Properly made Hummus should cling to a spoon and slowly slide off at room temperature. It should not need to spread.

It's Fresh Fish Friday!

Just a reminder, today is FRESH FISH FRIDAY!  We have scalllops, cusk and haddock today.  Plus, our ever-so-famous seafood chowder will be ready for lunch.

I was just in the store and it looks as good as ever.  Jen made another of her delectable extreme choclate cake and had some pies in the oven.

Our egg man is in need of empty egg cartons and of course we are always in need of paper bags.  Soooo, if you have any, bring 'em in!

That's about it for today....as always we look forward to seeing you in The Garden!

It's "T" Day

Hello Garden Folks!

Today is "T" day!  That's tax day for most of us but for all of us at and associated with THe Garden of Eaitn, it's our first annual High Tea day with true brittish high tea foods including smoked salmon sandwiches and cucumber snadwiches and lots of other yummy brittish foods!

This past weekend I was at the Manchester Home & Garden Show representing Bonnie Plants (the folks I grow for) at the Home Depot booth.  This coming Sunday, April 19th, is Earth Day and The Home Depot is featuring a buy one get one free on Bonnie Plants 4" and 5" vegetable and herb plants in biodegradable peat pots.  (I'm getting off subjuect) At anyrate, while at the show on Saturday I discovered a great bread company from Levant, Maine.  The man I met said that he had several people contact him telling him about The Garden of Eatin and how his products would fit just right into our scene. As it turns out they are very particular about who carries their products.  SO, next Tuesday the 21st we will have White, Wheat and Anadama bread from Daily Breads, in stock!  They make their bread from as much locally grown and organic ingredients as possible.  I can't wait for you to try thier bread!

April 21st is also when we start our lunchtime and dinner time delivery service!  It only gets better, he?

So, come on down through out the day today and celebrate "T" day, eat great brittish food and enjoy the wonderful weather!

Hiya Garden Fans!

The much awaited Garden Cards are here!  Buy a sheet of 10 cards worth $100 for $90 and use one or all of the cards as you wish.  Buy them as often as you want.  Your purchase of these cards will allow us to add the items so many of ourcustomers have asked for, including beer and wine.  This is our version of a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) but in our case its a CSS Community Supported Store).

We have lots of things planned for the coming weeks.  I can't wait to tell you all about them....but for now Ihope that you will use our Garden Cards to save on your fresh food needs and to help us help you!

Chicken in the pan!

HIya Garden Fans,

Today is Baked Chicken Wednesday!  They will be out of the over around 4!  Mmmm.  What a great day for chicken!

Starting within a day or so we will have our $100.00 coupons for $90.00 available.  You can call this a CSS rather than a CSA. (Community Supported Store vs. Community Supported Agriculture) You are an intricate part to our success and I really appreciate it!. As I had mentioned in an earlier email, with our program you not only know where your food comes from but you can gt it right away and at a savings!

Don't forget your Garden Bucks!  If you have collected twenty, come on in an pick up a roast of your choice!  Want to wait for Easter?  Place your order and we'll have one for you then!  Speaking of Easter, if you have any special requests, let us know!

All this spring preparation has kept me exceptionally busy with my greenhouse business and the store.  The Garden of Eatin' is sponsoring a Giant Pumpkin Contest to be held during the Richmond Halloween Festival in October.  Our own Erika Hoxie is planning our involement in the Festival.  For you giant pumkin and novelty gourd enthusiasts, we will have your plants and growing supplies available once the ground and weather are ready to produce you the biggest pumpkin ever seen on our portion of the Kennebeck!  We will also have a presentation given by the Maine giant pumkin growers association to help you grow the best fruits!
(This is so exciting!)

We are also taking donations for the new street light hanging baskets that I am growing for our beautiful new front street light poles.  Man, Front Street will be a happening place this year, it will look a little like downtown Disney!

Well, that;s all the happenings for this Wednesday April 1.  Sorry, no April Fools jokes here.  Just darned good foor and community spirit!

See ya at The Garden!

I want my, I want my E S B!

Helloooo Garden Fans!

All this great, sunny weather makes me pretty chipper these days.   And along with sunny days comes barbeques so the song of the week, next week, will be "I want my E S B" (sung to the tune of "I Want My MTV" by Dire Straits).  Certianly Beal Street's Extra Special Barbeque sauce rocks!  We have used it over the winter with our pulled pork and pulled chicken sandwiches.  And, of course, its the sauce in Beal Street's famous southern barbeque in their two restaurants in Bath and Portland.  And you can buy it right here for your own bbq's.

How about YOU writting the lyrics this week!  The best lyric writter will get a free bottle of ESB and two pounds of chicken!  The criteria is that you have to mention all the great things you like about The Garden of Eatin and eating local food.

Mark your calendars...Saturday April 25th is "Sample Day Saturday"!  We will have representatives from Jyang-Lee Kitchens, Gryffon Ridge Spices  and others giving out samples of thier food products and giving demonstrations on how to cook with them.  It should be a great time!

Also, we are working on a plan to help you with your food bills and to help us with ours.  Much like local farmers having CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) programs where the consumer pays half or more of their total purchase of the farmers goods, up front and then pays the rest upon a certain date.  We too want to offer you the same level of certainty that you know where you food comes from.  Afterall we buy from many local farms and others all over Maine.  Some may or may not have these programs and we can help them as well.  Plus, as you may know starting a business can be an expensive effort.  The best thing over a CSA with a farm is that you can use your coupons everyday of the year.

Available April second (not to be confused with April Fool's Day) we will have books of ten $10 coupons (a $100 value) on sale for $90.00.  That's a ten percent savings on your food.  Then you can use them at your convenience through out the year.  There's no limit on how many coupons you can use per visit  Your purchase of these coupon books will allow us add the much awaited wine and beer selection and a few other items.  After all this is YOUR local food store!

And finally, this week marks the beginning of spring (on the calendar) and with this change in seasons comes a change in our menu selections!   And starting this past Wednesday is bbq ribs!  We will have some great new sandwiches and salads to go (in the cooler) as well as a new selection of pies and cakes in the front case.  You'll just have to try the decadent raspberry cream pie!

As always, we all look forward to seeing you in The Garden of Eatin'!

Mooove over, chicken!

Hiya Garden Fans!

Tomorrow we are having bbq beef short ribs, instead of baked chicken!  Hope y'all like the change!  Also, speaking of chicken, due to the rising price of the Free Bird chickens and your desire for good, fair prices we have a new supplier of fresh chickens that includes a fresh new (lower) price.

The store looks great today!  All full and ready to roll.  I think that we have a pretty impressive amount of stock this week!  Including lots of BREAD.  Sorry for the short fall this past weekend.  Black Crow took a two week vacation and our own stock was depleted very quickly.  However, today we have plenty in house!

Hey, as always we look forward to seeing you in The Garden of Eatin'!

Vindaloo

Vindaloo

Vindaloo is typically a fiery hot curry made with pork but works equally well with lamb, chicken or seafood. Many restaurants will serve this dish with potatoes but traditionally they are not included.
  • 1 lb pork, chicken or seafood, cut into fork sized pieces
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 4 medium potatoes, cut into cubes
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 3-5 tbsp Vindaloo Curry
  • 2 cups water
  • 6 tbsp oil
  • cayenne if desired
  • salt
Instructions: Heat 2 tbsp oil in heavy pan and cook onions until they are a dark brown. Remove onions from pan and place in blender/food processor. Add Vindaloo Curry to onions along with 1/4 cup vinegar and blend until you have a smooth paste, add water if necessary. Brown potatoes using 2 tbsp of oil and remove from heat. Using remaining 2 tbsp of oil brown meat lightly. Add the Vindaloo Curry, potatoes and the 2 cups of water. Simmer, covered, until potatoes are done. Remove lid and simmer until sauce thickens. Adjust seasoning to taste. Serve with Basmati rice. For a hotter Vindaloo add cayenne until desired heat is achieved.

Afgan Inspired Stew

Afgan Inspired Stew
  • 1.5 lbs lamb, goat or chicken cubed
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 cups spinach, chopped
  • 1 - 15 ounce can chick peas or white beans
  • 1 large carrot, 1/4" dice
  • 4 cups chicken stock (or water)
  • 3 tbsp Cilantro, chopped
  • 2-3 tbsp Afgan Seasoning
  • Salt to taste
Instructions: Heat oil in a large heavy pan, add onion and fry gently until transparent. Increase heat, add garlic and meat cubes and fry, stirring often until juices begin to evaporate and meat begins to brown. Add chicken stock, Afgan Seasoning, chick peas and carrot. Bring to a slow simmer and reduce heat. Cover pan and simmer gently for 1-1 1/2 hours until meat is tender. time depends on cut of meat used. Add spinach and cilantro and cook further for 10 - 15 minutes. Serve with Basmati rice.
