Upwards and onwards!

Hiya Garden Fans,

Well, folks this is the last day of The Garden of Eatin and my time there.  Tomorrow it opens as Front Street Deli, with Jen Bleau as owner.  I am very proud to have her take over as she will continue the very concept I started and expand on it with her wide knowledge of foods.

I have given a lot of thought to how to write my "last" email to you as The Garden of Eatin'.  It could have the drone of The Doors "This is the End" playing in the back ground for a little ambience or it could be up beat.  I prefer upbeat!

One of the nicest compliments I heard, yesterday, was that this person was going to miss ME and MY subtle humor more than anything.  I really appreciated that comment and I will truely miss the fun of creating humorous emails.

One of the most important things, for me to do, is to THANK YOU for making the store what it was.  The very concept of the local food movement is what we started with.  I wrote to thirty farms with in twenty five miles, or so, and gave them the opportunity to sell their produce to us.  Last fall, farmers were inundated with produce and the "picking" was easy.  This year, however the poor growing season severly impeded our ability to keep our shelves full of local product.  We had to expand our reach to further away, which, in some cases went against the very concept of providing local food. However, thanks to our country's excellent distribution system we didn't have a mass starvation, in Richmond, and we were able to feed our customers. The year I spent in this retail venue and the insight I gained on the shortcomings of local food supply and distribution has been extremely valuable.

In the year to come I will be embarking on a new venture at my farm in Dresden, changing my "conventional" greenhouse growing operation to organic vegetable production.  When I first built the original 36,288 square feet of glass greenhouse in 2000, it was the first of its kind in Maine.  Many old timers came in and told me that it was going to fall under the weight of the snow (I wouldn't have invested as much as I did if it was going to collapse!) .  Today, Maine's largest greenhouse of the same style is in Madison and houses Backyard Farms hydroponic tomato growing facility and covers over 25 acres with glass.  And remember hydroponic growing is not organic.

I have also changed my mind on just how important biodynamics is to the health of our environment and to us, as the human element.  Our overall health, in America is failing and now the new science to growing good food is old school.  Rather than using chemical warfare to grow our foods, if we use good old common sense our food system will be better.  (there are a lot of books on this subject, so I won't go into much other detail) The Native Americans helped the early settlers of the new world to grow better corn by putting dead fish and seaweed under their seed in the field.  The degradation of those "organic" materials and the nutrients released in the process fed the corn and it grew better.  The methods farmers have used in the 20th century have completly distrupted the cycle and we now have soils that are essentially dead while the synthetic nutrients applied are the plants' life support system.

Oh, I have wandered again... sorry.  What I hope to accomplish in the years to come is to be a part of the solution in providing locally grown produce at affordable prices and supplying our supermarkets with food that hasn't traveled far.  And not only that, but developing a system of growing farmers to take over in the future. We have an exciting phenomenon taking place in Maine and that is the onslaught of young people interested in organic food production.  But there are lot of hurdles for these young folks and I want to see them and their desendants turn the stereotype of the poor, over worked farmer into something that more people will strive to do and want a career in.

If you want to keep in touch with me, you may email me at greenhouseguy08@yahoo.com (I know, I could have come up with something more crafty, but maybe in the future).

At any rate, I will be working the store for the last time, this evening and would love to have you stop in.

And once again....THANKS!

We are CEL..E..R..EE, all my brothers sisters and me...

Hey Garden GREATS,

Sorry for the many emails but they will end (from me) shortly....

And sorry for the goofy subject line, but family and celery are almost alike today.  Someone overlooked the stock and ordered more celery than we can possibly use or sell in a weeks time!!!!.  So, seeing that this is something of importance...its buy two for $3.00 or 1 for $1.99!  Can't beat that price anywhere!

I almost made the subject line "Have you hugged your celery today" but I thought that that was corny!

Any who, see ya over the weekend!

Signs, signs everywhere a sign!

Greetings Garden Fans!

In these final days before I depart The Garden of Eatin, I have gone a little nuts and am packing out the store for the weekend! Our dried fruits are plum full (no pun intended), as is Pleasant Pond Orchards Granola, the raspberry white chocolate truffle trail mix (thats a mouthful and a delicious one at that!) our sweets and pies, our quiches, and deli salads.  I got all kinds of cheese in today including the infamous Roaring
Forties Bleu and another brie, plus Morse's Sour Mustard Pickles

I was in Lewiston today and picked up some of Mailhot's Sweet Italian and Hot Italian sausage.  I love going there becuase it always smells so good. Today was no exception.  They were cooking something, I forgot the name but the Canadians call it french peanut butter.

The donut man was here today, so if you have been craving Mrs. Dunstan's Donuts, they are here.  Plus a few Fox Family Potato Chips.

Oh, by the way, have you seen the Richmond Sports Calendar?  In our ad, I say "When Richmond Wins, You Win!" When a Richmond School team wins, the particpants and families (one in the family has to have the uniform) that come in sporting a team uniform, they get $2.00 off a large pizza.  Jen will honor that ad and any others I have out there!  Last night just as I was cleaning up I spotted a bus coming over the bridge and thought "Oh, not now!" But unfortunately they must have lost and didn't stop here.  But if any of you has children in Richmond Sports, we'd love to have y'all come in.  Just give a call ahead if you have a large group and we'll be ready for ya'!

We also are well stocked with our hormone free boneless skinless chicken breast and ribeye.  We have lots of produce coming in tomorrow and WOW we will be full!  So, come on down and help me empty the place out this weekend!

Oh, and one other thing, don't let the crazy "Bridge Closed 4.5 Miles Ahead" sign keep you from coming in the store.  Why it has to be right in front of MY store I do not know.  But, it has caused some concern among some locals who don't read the rest of the sign that says LOCAL TRAFFIC ONLY.  Remember last year, when they ripped out the sidewalk just as we opened and it stayed that way for two months?  Oh well!

As ALWAYS I look forward to seeing y'all in The Garden THIS WEEKEND!

Get your sweet corn hee ya!

Hello Garden Friends,

You know, I try not to send too many emails, but around this place, things are always in motion and when something worth telling you comes along, I just have to let ya' know!

Years ago, when I was in high school and a member of the FFA (Future Farmers of America) we spent many days at the Big E, in Springfield Mass. manning the booths, competing in various competions with other New England FFA chapters and general hanging around.  In the midway, there was a food vendor selling corn on the cob.  The repeating, booming loud speaker would blurt out, every few minutes; Butter, butter, butter, butter corn, it's soooooooo gooood!   Well, if I had the same venue and had the corn I just picked up today I could do the same. As soon as I got this, I opened an ear and chomped right in, uncooked, thats how good this is!   Sweet and tender.

I got some of the best corn I have had all year, this morning.  Super fresh, super sweet butter and sugar corn.   Its awesome!   I have also stocked up on ribeyes and our hormone free chicken.  So, if you are barbequing this weekend, we've got great food for you!  Nothing says summer better than barbeque beef, chicken and corn!

Jen and Cassie have been hard at work making all of our great pies, quiches, cakes, pesto, hummus, soups, and more,  We are really well stocked for the Labor Day parties.

We are open all weekend.  Tomorrow we will close at 6:00pm, but Monday is business as usual!

See ya' in The Garden!

Ain't it Grand!

Hiya Garden Fans!

It's nice that the summer finally got here, now that its Labor Day!  Its also really great that I found (or she found me) a great person to take over The Garden of Eatin'.  Jen has worked for me nearly from the start of The Garden and you all have tasted much of her handy work in her quiches, salads and pastries.  Jen has always worked the 5am - 1pm shift and many of you may not have met her.  But tomorrow evening, Jen and her husband, Jim, will be here turning pies (pizza) and working the store.  We hope to complete the transition in the next week or two.  So, come on down and lets make them hop!  Order five or ten pies at a time (hehehe) just kidding.  But, really please come down and meet them if you can.

By tomorrow afternoon the store will be fully stocked for the weekend.  Boneless breast hormone free chicken, ribeye steaks, roasted vegetables, potato salad, corn on the cob, you name it we should have it!

Have a great weekend, and as always I look forward to seeing you in The Garden THIS WEEKEND!
