Something tasty, something sweet..Jen is the one you've got to meet!

Hi my dear Garden fans!

How did you like the peice on MPN Monday eveing and yesterday morning?  I thought it came out just right.  Tom Porter does a great job.  If you didn't hear it go to mpbn.org and then to Maine Things Considered to hear and/or read it.

Its great to have Jen, back in the kitchen whipping up her great sweet and savory treasures and its great working with her to transition the store to her.  Jen used to work early mornings but now can be found at almost any time of the day as she wants to meet her customers at various times.  So, be sure to stop in and talk with her.sometime!

I got a great deal on hormone free boneless skinless chicken breasts (its the same chicken we have been carrying) and I have put it on sale for $2.99/lb.  Also, vine ripened tomatoes from Backyard Farms, in Madison, just $1.99/lb. Let's not forget New England grown sweet corn at 65 cents an ear.

Someone (don't exactly remember who) came in and asked for sausage and cabbage soup the other day.  I said that we'd have it on Wednesday (thats today!) and we have it!  So, if that's you....come and get it!

With school starting, folks will be getting back into the swing of things and back to schedules.  We will be boosting up our meals to go to heat and eat, in the cooler as well as something special for the Richmond Sports teams; When Richmond wins, You win.  When any Richmond school team wins, you can get $2.00 off any large pizza.  Just wear the team uniform or other regalia and get rewarded for the win! I have a feeling we will be serving a lot of pizza over the course of the fall!  Jen will honor any specials I have initiated, once she takes the reigns.

Hey, have a great week.  See ya at The Garden of Eatin!

You can hear it all on MPR

Hiya Garden Fans,

Be sure to tune your radio to 90.1 FM at 5:40pm, tonight, to Maine Things Considered, for an interview with Tom Porter.  Since he did the intial interview with me just over a year ago, at our opening, he was quite interested in a follow up and especially as he had heard of the possible closure of the store.

A lot of neat things have happened over the past week and I dump it all out in the interview.  I think that you will like what your hear!

Today through Thurday we have potatoes for .99/lb and sweet juicy oranges 3/$1.00! (while supplies last).  Oh, yeah and tasty ribeye steaks for just $8.99/lb!

As always,  I look forward to seeing you at The Garden of Eatin!

Good Stuff in The Garden!

Hello Garden Fans!

Yes, I am still here!  We are OPEN and glad to be.  Thanks to all of you who sent me emails begging me to stay open, you really lifted my spirits and gave me a new direction to follow.

As you know, these past few months were "a tough row to hoe" as the weather was less than ideal for all of us.  It brought us all down.  If I learned anything from this past few weeks it was that we need each other, especially in these times.  I always look forward to seeing and talking to my customers both new and regulars alike!

Next week, Jen will be returning to muster up some wonderful sweets and baked goods.  I tried making quiches the other day and discovered, after making them that I had way too much filling left over.  They cooked pretty well, but didn't set up right.  Jen just happened to drop in and thats when I discovered I was using the wrong measuring cup and instead of cups, it was in quarts.  so, the "3/4 cup of cream" turned into "3/4 of a quart of cream".  You can see the predicament.  Quiche is better left to the professionals.

The local produce is coming in in dribs and drabs, but we still have a great selection from Maine and New England.  We have green and yellow squash, broccoli (from Presque Isle) Carlson's (Dresden) green beans, red and russet potatoes, onions, red onions, garlic, shallots, green bell peppers, red peppers, fresh basil, corn and a whole lot more.  Maine carrots will be in shortly and apples!

This week we have boneless chicken breast and ribeye steaks, perfect for grilling!   And today we have MJ's vegetarian baked beans!  I always look forward to MJ's homemade baked beans on Saturdays, they are awesome!

I hope to see y'all in the store this weekend!  (I will be in the store this afternoon and evening)

Have a great day!

The eleventh hour and a stay of execution!

Dear Friends,

What a roller coaster of a ride I have been on over the last two days.  And just a little while ago a fellow entrepeneur came to see me about a possible buyer for The Garden of Eatin',  SO WE ARE STAYING OPEN!  He told me the same things that I have been hearing; that this little store has done a lot for our area and it needs to stay open.  The folks that are interested have been in this business for a long time and he says that they would be a perfect fit to the goals and aspirations of The Garden of Eatin.

Yesterday and today it has felt like I have been at my own funeral and its been great seeing and hearing from so many of you. It really means alot.

So, keep on coming in, we are a little low on some items, but will fill back up shortly.  AND AS USUAL, I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU IN THE GARDEN!!!!!!

:(

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Saturday, August 15th will be our first year anniversary and, unfortunately, our last.  We are closing for good on Sunday.

It pains me, terribly, to tell you this as I have come to really enjoy the friendships I have made through the store and meeting so many great people.

My intents and goals for the store, from day one was to bring to town as much locally grown products from the rich agricultural lands around the bay and around Maine.  We made some of the best foods around right here in the store.  The women who have worked feverishly in the kitchen were some of the best around and I thank each one of them for their talents.

Unlike other "convenience" stores, we used the best ingredients in all of our products, relying on the food purveyors for only the basics and used as much local and fresh foods as possible  If we wanted to be like everyone else we would have put less meat on the sandwiches and used breads that one needs a dictionary just to understand what they are ingesting and charged less.  Our sandwiches had a true quarter pound of meat on each one.

And the pizza.....how I hate leaving you with out great pizza.  I loved to hear from y'all about how much you liked the pizza.

I blame the economy as well as the poor non-summer like weather that had a lot to do with the decline in business, when it was supposed to be the time of year with the most business, and now we head into fall.

If anything, our store helped the other stores to get better and give you a better selection.  Only one store in town had a small selection of meats, when we opened, now everyone has meat.  I brought in fish, now another has fish.  I brought in loads of vegetables, the other has more vegetables. I applogize for the abruptness, but I did all I could to keep this little store alive and I THANK YOU for being part of it.

EVERYTHING in the store must go by Sunday.  We have a deli case, convection oven, 20 quart mixer, front counter, small upright freezer and display shelving for sale as well, plus plenty of food.

I am sure that I will see many of you around!

Remember to eat well and to eat local!

Fabulous and Flavorful!

Hiya Garden Fans!

What beautiful weather, finally!  Its great to see the boat traffic on the river and see y'all out and about having fun!
At the Garden of Eatin, we have been enjoying the increased traffic this better weather brings.  Thank you!

This week we have ribeye steaks at $8.99/lb all week, Carlson's Farm green beans $1.99/lb and this Tuesday get a sneak taste of our new  Buffalo Chicken Pizza ( I am still looking for the proper name for it, such as, Buffalo Pie, not to be confused with cow pie) but any way, this is an awesome pizza.  Tuesday night is "name that buffalo chicken pie" night with 10" BCP for $6.99!   Let me know what you think!  I have been trialing it for a while and think I have it right this time!  Last night, I made the perfect pizza and gave a slice or two, to a very discerning customer.  She looked at me and gave me the two thumbs up and said that it is perfect!  Thats a compliment!

We have some new matted photos in our "Arts and Crafts" area that are really neat,.  Plus, some garden art from Freebird Forms in Dresden.

How do you like the new Fizzy Lizzy soda?  And the Fentimen's, which is out of stock, so I think y'all liked it.  Hopefully, the new pastas will be in soon, from Italy.  I can't wait to use them in our deli creations.

At anyrate, I hope that y'all are enjoying the great weather and our great foods....I look forward to seeing you in The Garden of Eatin!

Oops hit the wrong key...A Beautiful day on the kennebeck continued

Hello Garden Fans!

Starting this Sunday and every Sunday we are featuring items "on sale" for the week!  This week August 2 through 8 we have:

Maine Root Soda or Fizzy Lizzy  4 bottles for $6.00 (Save $1.96)
Smith Family Farm Organic yogurts  $4.99 (Save $1.00)
10% off on A Wee Bit Farm meats
Small pizza with one topping (besides cheese) $5.99 (Save $3.00)
Just in yesterday....All natural free range CHICKENS FROM DRESDEN!  Bridge Farm is now producing chickens for us and at a very reasonable price.  We have some in the freezer (where the Jyang Lee Oriental foods are) and some thawed in the meat door of the cooler.   Bridge Farm hopes to have their organic certification soon so we can add that to the list of why you should eat our local chicken!

Bridge Farm will also be growing our turkeys for Thanksgiving!  If you are in the mood to thiink Thankgiving, feel free to order your bird with a small deposit now.

We have been getting quite a few produce items from Carlson's Farm.  Becuase of the lousy growing season, they have chosen to sell the produce through us and not open thier farm stand until they have more selection.  So, we are enjoying their fresh cucumbers, zuccini and yellow summer squash, broccoli and greenbeans.

That's the news from The Garden of Eatin this Saturday afternoon.  Enjoy your weekend and as always, we look forward to seeing you in The Garden!
